The heart of any Mediterranean town is found within its old quarter and that is certainly true here on the French Riviera. Whether full of bright Mediterranean colour or the light grey of exposed old stone, bustling and noisy or peaceful and sleepy, every street has a story to tell, often dating back centuries.

Our staff guides will share their knowledge of local history and traditions as you explore the old towns of the Riviera during a relaxed and fun day trip. There are plenty to choose from, so let us know which ones tickle your fancy and we can create a tailor made itinerary for you. In order to get the most out of your day trip, it makes more geographical sense to combine Antibes, Cannes and St Paul or Villefranche, Eze and Monaco. Nice is central and could be included in either of these outings, depending on the time spent in each destination.

ITINERARY IDEA 1

NICE – Wander through Cours Saleya market to soak up the Provencal atmosphere, capture the beautiful bright colours and taste some local produce. Then explore the maze of pretty backstreets with your Friend in France guide by your side to draw your attention to the many interesting sights and architectural features that can so easily be missed.

ANTIBES – Explore this little town and learn of it's rich and fascinating history from the ancient Greeks and Romans to Medieval conflicts and 20th century artists. Today, Antibes boasts Europe's largest marina and its old town is alive with little cafés and restaurants, a traditional Provencal market and local produce boutiques.

CANNES – Best known for its red carpet events and sandy beaches but you can discover the authentic side of Cannes. From the bustling Fortville market to the medieval castle with 360° views. Once you’ve seen this side of the city, you’ll understand that Cannes has a lot more than Louis Vuitton to offer.

ST PAUL – This village is bursting at the seams with art, history and stories to be told. Enter through a passageway in the impressive fortification to explore the pretty streets that will lead you to the boutiques and galleries of talented local artists, as well as past monuments with centuries of history to tell.

VILLEFRANCHE SUR MER – Take a pitstop in this perfect Mediterranean fishing village overlooking the bay with traditional wooden fishing boats bobbing at the foot of waterfront restaurant terraces. On a hot summer’s day, the shaded village backstreets, the Cocteau chapel and the museums of the medieval citadel provide a welcome retreat and fascinating visit.

EZE VILLAGE – No prizes for guessing why this wonderful place has been nicknamed “the eagle’s nest”. Eze village is perched right at the top of a cliff between Nice and Monaco, overhanging the Mediterranean Sea and the French Riviera coastline. Once your Friend in France guide has introduced you to this village, we’re sure that you’ll understand why so many people have fallen in love with Eze for centuries.

MONACO – The old town of Monaco, known as Monaco-ville or Le Rocher, is located on high ground and offers views over the whole Principality, Port Hercule and Monte Carlo to the east and Fontvieille to the west. A stroll through these streets with your guide will enable you to see some of the most important landmarks of the Princiality... The Oceanographic museum The Prince’s Palace The Cathedral The courthouse and prison.
